Frequently Ask Questions

This page contains answers to commonly-asked questions about the elecworksTM.

What is elecworks™?

Is a 2D CAE tool that enables electrical designers and automation experts to create automation and electrical installation projects. It has modules within SolidWorks to share same data base enabling creation of 3D installation or panels mechanical views

Does elecworks™ require SolidWorks to operate?

elecworks™ core module is standalone and creates 2D views schematics' and reports; hence there is no SolidWorks required to that end.

If there is a need to create a 3D layout / panel then yes elecworks™ requires SolidWorks.

Does elecworks™ work within SolidWorks?

Yes, there are two elecworks™ modules for SolidWorks: "3D Layout & Data Module" and "3D Routing & cabling module"

What is elecworks™ for SolidWorks: 3D Layout & Data Module?

3D Layout & Data module lets you realize 3D assemblies and/or cabinets, insert 3D parts, project terminal strips…with real time consistency checking and updates. 2D native DWG files are automatically generated to complete project documentation.

elecworks™ for SolidWorks 3D Layout & Data Module works for any of three SolidWorks options:
Standard / Professional / Premium

What is elecworks™ for SolidWorks: 3D Routing & cabling module?

3D Routing & cabling module, (requires SolidWorks Routed Systems), enables cabinet and/or machine 3D wiring, with optimization and wire length calculation.

3D Routing & cabling module includes 3D Layout & Data Module

elecworks™ for SolidWorks 3D Routing & cabling module requires Routed Systems (included in SolidWorks Premium).

Is it possible to use ONLY elecworks™ for SolidWorks module?

Any elecworks™ module within SolidWorks requires at least one elecworks core license to operate. All required components data (from parts to their connections) are being taken from unique database generated from 2D schematics

How does elecworks interface with SolidWorks?

All elecworks™ modules for SolidWorks or core, interface between programs real time with shared elecworks™ data. There is no need to create or update any file. Changes are reflected on-line in real time.

Can we import legacy DWG files into elecworks?

Yes you can. There is a special wizard that guides you and enables "intelligent" re-use of AutoCAD files within elecworks™. There is no need to process DWG files for viewing or archiving purposes exclusively.

What files format are used by elecworks™?

elecworks™ core saves all its drawing files in DWG format; elecworks™ for SolidWorks saves in native SolidWorks format SLD. Data base is unique SQL format. elecworks™ can open without requiring conversion any DWG file up to rel. 2010.

Is elecworks™ hardware lock protected?

No it is not. elecworks™ is designed so that it can be used and managed 100% digitally. It only requires activation codes to run.

Can we reuse AutoCAD Electrical files into elecworks?

Yes you can. There is a special wizard that guides you and enables "intelligent" re-use of AutoCAD Electrical files within elecworks™. There is no need to process DWG files for viewing or archiving purposes exclusively.

Can we integrate elecworks within our IT system?

Yes you certainly can. All data are saved within MS SQL server data base enabling easy standard procedures to link to it.

What happens if a drawing file is lost or corrupted?

Although it is unlikely to happen, you would not even notice. Because elecworks™ is a real engineering tool aimed at projects design and all its data are saved within SQL data base, drawing file would automatically be created.

Are 3D cabinet layout and 3D routing & cabling modules available for other than SolidWorks 3D CAD platforms (CATIA, PTC, Inventor …)?

elecworks™ technology would certainly permit it, however there are no plans yet to develop for other 3D CAD platforms.

We already have SolidWorks Routed Systems (available within SolidWorks Premium), what is elecworks 3D Routing & cabling adding?

elecworks 3D Routing & cabling module adds two dimensions: automation & optimization First: elecworks™ does it AUTOMATICALLY. It is not done one by one, selecting start & end point couples likewise standard routed systems options.
Second: 3D Routing & cabling module, enables cabinet and/or machine 3D wiring, with optimization and shortest wire length calculation. This is achieved as per elecworks connections data in an automated way following the available trunks or raceways.
